This is the second of our 6-part series of blog posts on the Cairn values. This week, Kay explores what it means for us to be purposeful….
Other than your alarm clock, small baby or caffeine, what gets you out of bed in the morning? What gives your day focus and your hours a sense of purpose?
It’s become a popular interview question, to ask a candidate “What gets you up in the morning?” Employers want to know what makes someone tick and the things that they value life. How would you answer?
Having purpose to our days and lives is something we long for, something we’re made for. Paul says in Ephesians 2: 10
‘For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.’
Each one of us, made for a purpose, knit together, a unique blend of gifts, personalities and passions. Finding our purpose in Jesus – doing the things Jesus did, following in his works, words and ways. Asking God to show us his heart, reveal his will, affirm our part in it, so we can have a go, with every bit of energy and opportunity he gives us.
And it’s a team sport. Figuring this stuff out takes the wisdom and encouragement of others – people cheering us on, calling out what they see God doing in us, picking us up when we fall. Each of us bringing our part alongside all of God’s family, building something wonderfully diverse together.
Howard Schultz, founder of Starbucks, said “When you’re surrounded by people who share a passionate commitment around a common purpose, anything is possible.”
Cairn is clear about its purpose. We’re called to the empowering of leaders, equipping of the church and the restoration of hope. The future of the church, the building of God’s kingdom, the transformation of our communities depend on it.
And it’s possible, as each believer takes hold of their purpose in God’s kingdom. It’s possible, as each church fully realises all of its kingdom purpose in its community.
And it begins with every disciple, every leader, understanding their purpose and going after it with everything God gives them. What’s your part to play?
